Art Senior Show

Apr 11, 2016 by Ben Braksick

Indianapolis – Senior Show, featuring artwork created by five graduating Marian University art majors, will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery in the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences from April 11-May 6, 2016. An opening reception of the exhibit will be held April 14 from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

Allison Willets, Emily Meyer, Jennifer Marvel, Laura Zachary, and Alyson O’Conner will exhibit their work, which includes graphic design, photography, painting, and three-dimensional pieces. Marvel describes a musical influence to her work, which was inspired by Art Chantry who “uses a lot of ordinary images to create interesting pieces of work.” Branding is the most interesting field to O’Conner because of how visual identity determines the success of a particular company or organization. She describes, “The visual identity is the first thing that the customer will see, which will form her opinion of the company even before doing business with them. As a designer, this creates an interesting challenge of developing an appropriate logo for my client.” Willets takes a different approach with her art, which reflects injustice. Willets articulates, “I chose to focus this show on destruction after witnessing adolescents suffering from drug addiction overseas and stateside. The amount of pain and suffering that I saw in those individuals was in stark contrast to the general perception of an addict. However, because there are many different forms of destruction in addition to addiction I also portray the destruction that accompanies the objectification of women, practice of racism, and devaluation of culture. Together, these works show just a glimpse of the rawness and realness of the human experience, giving viewers an image to connect emotionally with these difficult issues that are so easy to turn away from.”

The Marian University Art Gallery (Evans Center) is located on the north end of the second floor of the Michael Evans Center for Health Sciences on the Marian University campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome. Please contact Gallery Director Jenny Ambroise at jambroise@marian.edu for additional information.
