Student African American Society was founded in 1967 and we are the largest and oldest, non-greek organization within this institution. Our primary purpose is to unify and educate the under represented populations within the Syracuse student body as well as the Syracuse Community. We convey our purpose through many philanthropies as well as annual and semester speakers and events.

Description

The Student African-American Society was founded in the spring of 1967 by 150 undergraduate African-American students and is the first of its kind at a predominantly white private university.
SAS had an initial list of goals which were:

1) Establish an African-American Studies Department
2) Receive funding from the University annually
3) Institute a Black Cultural Center

SAS is now the oldest, largest, most respected and most active organization that represents descendants of original people. Today, SAS has a constituency of about 1400 students or 12% of Syracuse University student population.Our primary purpose is to unify and educate the under represented populations within the Syracuse student body as well as the Syracuse Community. We convey our purpose through many philanthropies as well as annual and semester speakers and events.

In order to join the Student African American Society, email us at StudentAfricanAmericanSociety@yahoo.com You will receive an application if you wish to be on e-board or a committee. If you wish to be a general member you will and be added to the emailing list in which we will contact you when we have our general body meetings and events.

Members must have a GPA of at least a 2.0.
