Break Away

Break Away is a DCA organization that sends Denison students on week-long community service trips out of state during the last week of winter break and during spring break. Each trip focuses on a specific societal issue, and each trip’s issue is different, so no two trips are the same. After students are placed on service trips, the group meets once a week to educate themselves on the issue and the specific community in which they will do service.

Students who wish to participate need to fill out participant applications that are released in early October. Students at all levels of service experience and from all different organizations on campus are encouraged to apply.

Each trip group consists of 12-14 participants, and they are led by two trained student site leaders. Break Away is a great opportunity to make a difference in a community relating to a specific social issue. It is also a great chance to experience life away from the Hill for a week and bond with other Denisonians!

Our organization is a chapter of Break Away®, a national non-profit organization. Our site leaders and chairs have been trained by through the national organization.

Watch for notices about Alternative Break trips that will be happening over winter and spring breaks!

Description

BreakAway is a national organization that gives young men and women the chance to serve in different capacities in varying cities across the United States. Denison's BreakAway Chapter offers several week-long service trips during the last week of Winter Break. Prior to the trips taking off, students spend time with their group leaders and group members discussing their topic, location, service-learning, and preparing for their direct service in the communities they will serve. The trip topics in recent years have covered topics such as Education, Economics, and Civil Rights in the 21st Century. Students have a unique chance to leave Denison and Granville to delve into some of the most pressing issues of our generation hands on.
