ACU Performs at Regional UniGames
Jul 27, 2017 by Patrick Rebakis
At the recent Australian University Sport Regional UniGames held from 2 – 6 July in Geelong, Victoria (South Region); Newcastle, New South Wales (East Region) and Rockhampton, Queensland (North Region). ACU represented its national status with over 230 students representing the university across the three regions.
ACU was the only university in Australia with representation in three regions across our six campuses. Finishing off a successful week at the Games ACU came away with one silver and six bronze medals. The Women’s 3x3 basketball team claimed silver in the South while bronze medals were won in the following sports: Women’s basketball (South), Men’s 3x3 basketball (South); Women’s futsal and Mixed touch football (East) and lawn bowls and Women’s hockey (North).
The South contingent started the week with a bang after a successful showcase 3x3 Basketball tournament to claim silver in the Women’s and bronze in the Men’s. As the cold week in Geelong progressed ACU teams fought hard to make finals. Both futsal and lacrosse teams made the bronze medal match but finished in a respectable fourth place. The South region finished stronger than ever in the Australian University Sport Per Capita Champion, coming a close 2nd to La Trobe University.
In the East, both mixed touch and Women’s futsal lost their semi-finals in tight matches to put them into the Bronze medal playoff. Both teams went on to claim bronze with Mixed Touch defeating Charles Sturt University and Women’s futsal winning 2-1 against Newcastle University.
While in the North the Women’s hockey team made it to the preliminary final but couldn’t get over the line in order to qualify for Australian UniGames. The sour taste was made a bit sweeter by claiming a bronze medal. The boys on the bowling green claimed back to back bronze medals in lawn bowls to cap off a successful week.
Many of the events at regional games are qualification sports for Australian UniGames held later this year in the Gold Coast. Following on from last year’s success, ACU is looking to send our strongest team to compete at the Gold Coast from Sunday 24- Friday 29 September. With over 30 team and individual sports on offer, if you are a keen and competitive sportsperson we need to hear from you! Join 'Team ACU' in our quest for gold!
