Jun 8, 2017 by Patrick Rebakis
ACU students are gearing up to head around the country to attend Australian University Sport’s, Regional UniGames. We want to provide you a first-hand report on how each region is looking leading into the Games which are being held from the 2nd -6th July. Over 260 ACU students are gearing up for big results following on from last year’s successes at Australian UniGames (AUGs). Regional UniGames are a great opportunity for students to play against 42 other universities in Australia with many of the sports needing to qualify for AUGs later in the year.
Eastern UniGames (EUGs) - Newcastle, New South Wales
EUGs will be home to the largest contingent of ACU athletes with a total of 110 Canberra, Strathfield and North Sydney students travelling to Newcastle. Teams have been entered in: Basketball (Men’s and Women’s), Netball (Mixed and Women’s), Futsal (Men’s and Women’s), Oztag (Mixed), Tennis, Touch (Mixed) and Volleyball (Women’s). Led by two highly experienced team captains in Alyssa Berryman and Dan Kwon.
Alyssa is currently studying her Masters in High Performance Sport and is off to her 9th Australian University Sport event! Alyssa will be leading from the front with a wealth of experience whilst playing Women’s basketball at EUGs. Her goal as captain is to “to encourage ACU teams to support one another, attend as many games/matches of fellow ACU teams and always remain positive and friendly not only to each other but other universities”.
Dan is the man… of many talents and will be playing mixed netball in Newcastle this year. Throughout his double degree in Exercise Science and Business Admin he’s been to three EUGs and two AUGs. He’s looking to lead Team ACU and “to get students returning to Uni Games every year!”
Southern UniGames (SUGs) - Geelong, Victoria
A team of 70 ACU students will head to Geelong to compete for glory in the south. Teams have been entered in: Basketball (Men’s & Women’s), Futsal (Men’s), Netball (Mixed & Women’s), Lacrosse (Mixed), Tennis, Ultimate (Mixed) and 3x3 Basketball (Men’s & Women’s). Led by two team captains with high hopes, Kogulan Sabaratnam (far right Futsal) and Meg Dargan (no.5 Basketball).
Kogulan is a Masters in Secondary Teaching student who is off to his first SUGs after loving AUGs in Gold Coast last year. He’ll be playing futsal and is looking “to go four days without seeing the physio....and win as many medals as possible”.
Meg is currently undertaking her Masters of Teaching and will be leading from the front in the women’s basketball team. Meg plays for ACU’s Melbourne Basketball club and has been to one AUGs and one SUGs. She said she “can't wait for an amazing week with everybody, no doubt they'll be plenty of good times and gold medals”.
Northern UniGames (NUGs) Rockhampton/Yeppoon, Queensland
ACU is sending a squad of 80 students from the Brisbane campus to the up-and-coming city of sunshine, Rockhampton which is co-hosting the Games with the town of Yeppoon. Teams have been entered in: Basketball (Men’s), Futsal (Women’s), Hockey (Women’s), Lawn Bowls, Netball (Mixed and Women’s), Touch (Mixed), Volleyball (Women’s) and Tennis. Well-deserved team captains Troy Simkin and Emily Toohey are adamant they can secure more medals this year.
Emily's currently studying Dual Bachelor Paramedicine & Nursing and this year she'll be playing futsal. Emily has had plenty of involvement with Uni Games having attended three AUG's and three NUG's! Her goal as captain is "to ensure ACU win as many sporting medals as possible & to take out the 2017 Spirit award".
Troy's a Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science student and has attended three AUG's and one NUG's. Troy play’s in just about every team ACU has to offer on campus and this year he's back to defend his bronze medal in Lawn Bowls. Troy's goal is "to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience".
All students who are attending the regional games this year are excited about getting to their location, playing their chosen sport and getting to mix with the other universities that are attending. Stay tuned to the ACU Health, Sport and Wellbeing Facebook page for photos and results from each region.
