ACU Cronulla Sharks Finals Finish
May 8, 2017 by Patrick Rebakis
Partnership club the ACU Cronulla Sharks finished off an excellent season with both the Men’s and Women’s teams making the finals in the National Water Polo League. The Men’s team claimed the bronze against University of Western Australia (UWA) Torpedoes while the Women narrowly missed out on an opportunity for a medal after claiming 5th in a hard fought match against the University of Technology (UTS) Sydney. The juniors dominated the finals series taking home the Gold and National Titles in both the U14 Boys and U18 Girls divisions.
Late last year ACU announced a four year partnership with the Cronulla Sharks Water Polo Club. Following the partnership the ACU Cronulla Sharks have proven to be a top contender on the national Water Polo scene competing against the other top universities in Australia claiming two junior national championships and both the Men’s and Women’s senior teams making the finals series.
The Men’s team had a strong finish to the season making the bronze medal playoff against the UWA Torpedoes. The ACU Cronulla Sharks, who finished the season second on the ladder, surpassed the Torpedoes with an imposing 15-7 win. Although the Torpedoes fought their way back into the game in the second half, the ACU Sharks proved why they were a top contender in the 2017 season.
The ACU Cronulla Sharks U14Boys managed to top the University of New South Wales (UNSW) West Magpies in the gold medal match held in Aubury/Wodonga. While the U18 Girls championship held in Perth, resulted in the ACU Cronulla sharks defeating the UNSW Killer Whales to claim the national title.
As one of Australia’s premier Water Polo clubs the ACU Cronulla Sharks are supporting ACU sport programs to provide coaching assistance in the lead up to and during the 2017 Australian Uni Games held on the Gold Coast in September. ACU is on the quest for more silverware following back-to-back Gold medals for the ACU’s Women’s Water Polo team at the Australian Uni Games in 2015 and 2016.
