Notre Dame Prove Too Strong in Quest for the Holy Grail
Oct 25, 2016 by Patrick Rebakis
ACU and The University of Notre Dame squared off in the clash for the “Holy Grail” on Friday 21st October at Sydney University Sports & Aquatic Centre. The Holy Grail is an annual sporting event in a three sport mixed team format. It is designed to encourage closer relations between the two Catholic Universities, and for the students to engage in a health, sport and wellbeing representing their University in a competitive yet friendly environment.
This year was the first time the event was to be contested in indoor sports, with Basketball getting the games underway. In a closely fought first half Notre Dame went to the break with a narrow 20-16 lead. The second half was a different story however, as Notre Dame stamped their authority on the game running away 42-27 victors and taking a 1-0 lead in the quest for the grail.
As a result ACU had to win the next match in Futsal to retain the Holy Grail for a third straight year. Things were looking dire however when Notre Dame raced out to a 3-0 lead early in the first half. ACU tried their best to get back in the contest but Notre Dame never really looked in danger from that point on, eventually running out comfortable 6-1 winners.
With the Grail safely in the hands of Notre Dame, Dodgeball was a friendly and frenetic way to finish off a great evening of University sport. In a close finish Notre Dame again were the winners on the day, and reversed the 3-0 result of last year in a emphatic victory.
Overall it was a fantastic event played in great spirits between the two Universities, and we look forward to regaining the Grail back in 2017!
