WARNING: Phishing Scam Circulating

Nov 19, 2018 by Anne E Graham

Warning: An online phishing scam (text below) is currently circulating impersonating a message from an alumnus offering money. See below for more information.

If you have received this email or a similar one, please do not reply to it, open any attachments or click on the link.

GW IT has confirmed it is a scam and requested mail blocks as well as an Infomail notification for students.

This type of scam offers money in the form of a $1000 donation. The scammer will send $2000 and will ask the recipient to deposit it and send back $1000 (because they made a mistake or other excuse). Then, the original check bounces in a few days, the scammer is up $1000 and the victim is out $1000.

If you receive any phishing attempts in the future, please do not reply to them, open any attachments or click on any links. Please forward the email to abuse@gwu.edu.

If you have any questions about the validity of a link you see or a message you receive, please contact the IT Support Center at 202-994-GWIT (4948), ithelp@gwu.edu or IT.GWU.EDU.

The text of the email currently circulating follows:

Hello,

I am glad writing your student organization at George Washington. I’m a 1999 alumni at GWU and I am much eager to give back to the Colonials because while I was attending, I never had the opportunity to contribute my quota to student activities and volunteering.

I am willing to make a donation of $1000 for the development of your club. I will be making payment by check to you as the Financial director/ Treasurer so send the the details to issue the check (name, phone and mailing address). I will prefer to work with you independently.

Thank you while I await your response.

Bradley Marcus
Director
