The mission of Ella Austin is to facilitate leadership in communities and assist individuals and families throughout San Antonio to improve their quality of life. They envision self-sufficient, diverse communities that are characterized by being physically, socially and economically healthy places in which individuals and families can live and develop to their maximum potential.
For over 100 years, the Ella Austin Community Center has served the City of San Antonio and Bexar County. In 1897, Mrs. Ella Austin, a revered African American who was committed to serving her community, founded Ella Austin Orphans Horne, located at 1920 Burnet. She cared for homeless children until 1940.
On November 1, 1968, the children’s home was converted into a multi-purpose community center. The center is not only one of Texas’ largest, but also a one-stop shop for comprehensive service. It now functions as a neighborhood-based, multi-purpose, social service agency, which addresses broad areas of human need.
